Shikshan Prasarak Mandal Gopal Krishna Gokhale College, Kolhapur is affiliated to the Shivaji University, Kolhapur. It was established in 1950. Shikshan Prasarak Mandal was founded in 1945 by a great Vedantic Sanskrit Scholar, Stalwart of education, Shikshan Maharshi Prin. M. R. Desai (M.Ed. Leeds University, U.K.) and his mentor, a renowned parliamentarian Barrister Balasaheb Khardekar (Bar-at-Law, Cambridge University) with a passion to spread education among deprived, marginalized poor and needy. Since its inception the institution is striving with uncompromising dedication to enhance the spread of education, issues related to environment, tree plantation, natural resource management. The institution has schools having vocational courses, junior colleges and undergraduate colleges spread in the remote rural areas of Karnataka and Maharashtra State. It has become a bench mark in the socio-cultural, educational history of the state. The institution has produced national and international sportsmen, eminent scholars , social and environmental activists, winners of state and national awards like Arjun Award, Shiva Chhatrapati Award and Padamahshri Award, administrators and politicians of rank and class. Recently under the dynamic guidance of Hon. Shri, Jaykumar Desai, Secretary, Shikshan Prasarak Mandal has won the prestigious Vanashri award of the Government of Maharashtra as the recognition and appreciation of the institution contribution to the field of education and issues related to environment. The College Library, the Power House of Knowledge is enriched with about 95,000 books on various subjects. The college offers various courses in Arts, Commerce & Science. B. Sc.
