Gandhi Medical College the Apex Institute of Bhopal City was established in 1955.When Bhopal was a part C State and was governed by the Ministry headed by then Chief Minister Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma. It was formally inaugurated on 13th Aug. 1955 by the Union Railway Minister Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri.

In November 1956, after the reorganisation of States, the State was named Madhya Pradesh and the capital moved from Nagpur to Bhopal, the city of lakes. The Medical College was affiliated to Agra University and later to Vikram University of Ujjain before Bhopal University was established. Bhopal University has been renamed as Barkatullah University.

Initially the College was run in the building of S.V. Polytechnic College. The foundation stone of the present building was laid on 15th September 1956 by Shri G.B. Pant, Home Minister of India. The prestigious college building after its completion was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru on 13th March 1963.

The first Principal of the college was Prof. S.C. Sinha. Hamidia and Sultania Zanana Hospitals were attached to Gandhi Medical College to impart practical and clinical training of Medicine and allied subjects and Surgery and allied subjects to the under graduate and post graduate medical students. Hamidia hospital is multi speciality tertiary care teaching hospital. It was earlier known as Prince of Wales King Edwards Memorial hospital for men.
