My Name is Ted Mitchell, and I have been teaching people how to read since 1974. I am a self confessed reading enthusiast, with a passion in teaching people how to read. I have a diploma in education, with the majority of my subjects focussing on literacy. I have held the role of literacy coordinator at Sale College and taught English there since 1998.
I am constantly reminded of the importance of what I do as each of my students progresses in their reading skills and grows in confidence. I have been teaching reading for a long time and I still am excited as each student achieves self sufficiency and moves on.
Reading is such an important skill in this day and age. Most school age students can expect to have several jobs in their lifetime all of which will require retraining and in turn will require a high degree of reading ability. Not having these skills will be a huge handicap.
Why choose us?
At the reading clinic the focus is on each student as an individual and the guarantee is that everyone improves. The approach which we use was developed in the 1970’s and has seen many, many students improve their reading ability. It is a structured program using phonetics and also dealing separately with difficult letter combinations so that students progress at their own pace and finish with a greater understanding of our language and a set of sound and easily understood word attack skills.
There are so many people that I have helped over the years who are now in the community with great qualifications leading an exciting and fulfilling life. I do often think of one person in particular. Tom came to me having been expelled from every primary school in Tamworth and with a very low reading ability. In a very short time I had him reading at a normal level. He eventually returned to school, achieved his HSC (NSW VCE equivalent) and went on to complete a university degree in IT.
