About Us

Govt Degree College for Women, Kathua, was established in 2005 by an order of the Government of Jammu & Kashmir, initially offering the Arts stream. The Science stream was introduced in the academic session 2010-11. The college has seen a steady increase in student enrollment, with 975 students in the 2021-22 session and 1,052 students in the 2022-23 session. Recognized by the UGC under sections 2(f) and 12(B), the college was accredited with a B+ grade by NAAC in 2022.

The college campus spans approximately 60 Kanals in an environmentally friendly area and includes administrative, academic, and library blocks, along with modern laboratories. The lush green lawns in front of the academic blocks create a learner-friendly ambiance.

Infrastructure facilities at the college include ICT-enabled classrooms, a multipurpose hall, an open-air theatre, a browsing center, a computer lab with internet access, sports facilities, and well-equipped science laboratories. The college is a declared Tobacco and Drug-Free Zone, and a proposal for a 30-bed girls’ hostel has been approved. The campus is under 24×7 CCTV surveillance. The multipurpose hall hosts various academic, administrative, and cultural programs.

The college offers programs across various disciplines in adherence to NEP 2020. Current academic offerings include English, Education, Sociology, Economics, Political Science, Hindi, Urdu, Dogri, Sanskrit, EVS, History, Public Administration, Food Science & Quality Control, Home Science, Botany, Zoology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Geography, Physics, and Computer Applications.

The college has excelled academically, with Ms. Deepti securing an A+ grade with a 92 CGPA in semester I of the 2022-23 session. Other notable achievements include Ms. Shivani Pathania and Ms. Noopur Sharma securing 7th and 10th positions in BSc Part-III (2012-13), Ms. Nalinie Sharma and Ms. Tania Gupta securing 1st and 10th positions in BA Part-III (2014-15), and Ms. Ananya Sharma securing 5th position in BA Part-III (2015-16). The college is committed to achieving academic excellence by enhancing student skills and providing value-based education with contemporary and global relevance.

The college aims to train young women to excel in both professional and personal life. In collaboration with Central University, Jammu, and NIELIT, the college offers skill-based courses and organizes field visits, industrial visits, and educational tours. The college also excels in sports, with an active MoU with Youth Services and Sports, Kathua, and facilities for badminton, kho-kho, volleyball, table tennis, and cricket. Ms. Mona Rajput and Ms. Tania Gupta won gold and silver medals, respectively, in a district-level shooting competition (2019-20). The college’s players have secured first positions in cricket, tug of war, and kho-kho competitions at the Higher Education Department’s Sports Festival (2020).

The NCC and NSS cells have been recognized nationally for their cadets’ and volunteers’ performances. NCC and NSS students actively participate in various national camps, and NSS volunteers receive Vice Chancellor certificates from the University of Jammu annually. Students also participate in the “Display Your Talent” competition organized by the University of Jammu. Various clubs, such as the Youth Club, Yuva Tourism Club, Drug De-addiction and Psychological Counseling Cell, Innovation Club, Eco Club, Red Cross Club, Red Ribbon Club, Science Club, and Road Safety Club, conduct activities to enhance students’ overall personalities.

The college strives to strengthen the quality of education by holding frequent interactive sessions, workshops, and seminars, either independently or in collaboration with other departments, to maximize students’ potential. With continuous support and encouragement from the Higher Education Department, J&K Government, parents, and citizens of Kathua, the college aims to emerge as a role model in providing quality education to women from all sections of society.
